Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to the White House on Tuesday was intended to highlight America’s unwavering support for Israel and its security 75 years after the country’s inception.
However, the Oval Office conversations served to highlight the ongoing difficulties between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who has yet to visit Washington since taking office last year.
Tensions between Biden and Netanyahu’s right-wing administration have been simmering for months, owing in part to contentious plans for a judicial overhaul and what Biden sees as radical positions espoused by Netanyahu’s government members. The US has also criticised Israel’s attempts to develop settlements in the occupied West Bank.
