On this day, people pay tribute to Ambedkar by presenting flowers, lighting candles, and holding cultural activities. Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, was the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and is often referred to as the “Father of the Indian Constitution.” Ambedkar also served as Independent India’s first Minister of Law and Justice. Babasaheb was born into a poor Dalit Mahar family from Madhya Pradesh. He battled diligently for the equal rights of marginalised groups in society. Since 1927, he has been involved in aggressive anti-untouchability campaigns. Later, he was regarded as a ‘Dalit Icon’ for his efforts to their rights.
