Amidst the blazing crisis in Gaza, press coverage of Putin’s savage campaign on Ukraine disappears

The protracted struggle in Eastern Europe has been completely overshadowed by the blazing war in the Middle East, with Vladimir Putin’s campaign of brutality against Ukraine garnering far less attention from the press than it did before the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out.

The GDELT Project examined closed-captioning data from the Internet Television Archive and found that following Hamas’ devastating terror strike on October 7, cable news coverage of the Ukraine war drastically decreased. CNN only covered the conflict in Ukraine to the extent of eight percent of their programming in the days leading up to the Israel-Hamas war. CNN, the cable news network that covered Ukraine the most, dropped to less than 1% following the assaults.
