On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping held in-depth talks with his Maldivian counterpart Mohamed Muizzu, after which the two countries signed 20 “key” agreements, including one on tourism cooperation, and announced the strengthening of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
Muizzu stated that he was honoured to make his first state visit to China and become the first foreign head of state that China has welcomed this year, demonstrating the significance both sides place on the development of bilateral relations.
Xi emphasised that China respects and supports the Maldives in pursuing a development path that is appropriate for its unique circumstances. China also strongly supports the Maldives in maintaining their national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national dignity, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
