The National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing confirmed Li Qiang as China’s next Premier on Saturday, putting a long-time ally of current leader Xi Jinping in charge of the world’s second-largest economy for the next decade.
Mr. Li’s unexpected and rapid rise, at the age of 63, has highlighted Mr. Xi’s total and sweeping control.
