At a high-stakes summit in California on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping clasped hands and promised to ease tensions as they met for the first time in a year.
At the picturesque Filoli country residence in the California foothills close to San Francisco, where Xi had just emerged from a black limousine, Biden grinned and greeted the Chinese leader before they shook hands on the front steps.
Following that, the two leaders went inside for meticulously planned, private discussions about trade, sanctions, and Taiwan—topics that have strained ties between the biggest economies in the world.
Biden stated that tensions “should not veer into conflict” in his opening statement.
