Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, appealed his defamation case conviction on Monday in a Surat court, claiming that the maximum sentence had caused him “irreparable loss” and that he had been “treated harshly at the stage of determination of sentence taking into account his position as Member of Parliament.”

Gandhi also argued that it appeared “reasonable to argue” that the maximum punishment imposed to him was to “attract the order of disqualification (as an MP)” in his appeal before the Surat District and Sessions Court against his two-year conviction.

The appeal claims that the excessive penalty is not only against the law but also unjustified in the current case because of its overpowering political overtones. The appeal calls the conviction “erroneous”
