The Senate has confirmed civil rights lawyer Nusrat Chowdhury as the first Muslim female federal judge in US history.
After a 50-49 vote on Thursday, she will begin her lifetime appointment in Brooklyn federal court in New York.
The American Civil Liberties Union, where she is the legal director of the ACLU of Illinois, applauded the confirmation.
