According to a leaked Pentagon memo obtained by the Washington Post, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has privately briefed NATO officials about Canada’s failure to meet the organization’s military budget target.NATO member states are required to spend a minimum of 2% of their GDP on defence, according NATO regulations.
According to the document, Trudeau told the alliance that “Canada will never reach two percent defence spending,” stressing that the military budget of Ottawa has not topped 1.4% of its GDP in nearly 30 years.
