Union Minister Smriti Irani, who beat Congress President Rahul Gandhi in his family bastion five years ago, suffered a humiliating defeat in one of the important prestige contests of the Lok Sabha election. Mr Gandhi, meanwhile, earned a historic victory in Raebareli, where he opted to carry on his mother Sonia Gandhi’s legacy. Following the ruling, Ms Irani expressed gratitude to those who supported her. “Such is life…” I spent a decade travelling between villages, fostering optimism and dreams, and constructing infrastructure like as highways, Naali, Khadanja, bypasses, and medical colleges.
