Another Win for Netanyahu, but at What Cost?

In order to obtain further restrictions on the Israeli judiciary’s ability to pose a check on his far-right coalition government, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again gone beyond the pale and defied a national protest movement.

But this feels different after years of the Israeli leader teetering on the precipice and controlling turmoil. Many Israelis are unsure whether the social harm created by this particular Netanyahu triumph can be repaired. They also doubt that Mr. Netanyahu will be able to handle the fallout from a clash he instigated.

Mr. Netanyahu sat indifferently between two cabinet colleagues as they argued in the closing moments before the vote.
