A spokesman for the U.S. State Department said on Monday that Imran Khan’s arrest is a “internal matter” for Pakistan and refrained from commenting on the legal issues facing the former prime minister and frequent critic of the United States.
Khan was taken into custody by the police on Saturday in Lahore after a court gave him a three-year prison term for selling state items without authorization. The opposition leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party would not be able to run in the national elections later this year as a result of the guilty verdict.
