North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for methods to promote economic development, describing a failure to provide people with basic life necessities such as food as a “serious political issue,” according to official media.
Kim made the statements during a lecture on regional development at the 19th Enlarged Meeting of the Political Bureau of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the country’s ruling party, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to KCNA.
North Korea has experienced severe food shortages in recent decades, including a famine in the 1990s, which are sometimes compounded by natural disasters such as floods that damage harvests.
